Please join me for a workshop or class this summer!  I am giving some exciting new workshops in the studio. Don't forget to check out my schedule for workshops offered at other locations.

The best news is that I am offering a Week-long Painting Intensive in my studio. This is great for those of you that want long uninterrupted painting time. There are two sessions, one in August and one in October. The August session is already nearly full so register early for the October session or email me about getting on the waiting list.
August 17-24 or  October 19-24, 2009.
 August session is full.
The Seductive Acrylic Encaustic workshop comes to my studio!  Don't you love the creamy look of encaustic? Join me for a three day workshop on how to create the look of encaustic with acrylics, without all the fuss of traditional encaustic.  Yum!
September 4-6, 2009.
You asked for it, now I'm bringing it!  Painting from the Soul - a three day workshop that will change your painting life - is back.  Don't wait to register! I only take six students for this workshop and it fills up fast. September 25-27, 2009.

Thinking about the Ground

Most of us  routinely paint on acrylic gesso as a ground or primer.  If you buy a canvas off the shelf it is almost surely primed with acrylic polymer gesso. I have been thinking about this very fundamental aspect of painting and how it impacts my work.

Recently I was commissioned to paint a very large piece (4' x 9') and I wanted to work with a lot of water in the paint, to create a very loose underpainting.  I knew that if I thinned down the paint to a wash consistency with water, it would not bond well to the canvas. So I decided to prime all three canvases (each was 36" x 48") with a mixture of Golden Absorbent Ground, Gesso and Titan Buff for a warm tone.

After this ground had dried for a day, I started to paint on it.  And I have to tell you, it was a blast! I flooded the surface with water and dropped intense colors like Cobalt Teal and Phthalo Blue into it and watched them as they dispersed or intermingled.  I could lift the canvas and move the pools of color around.

Check out my blog to see a short video of this piece "Spring Eclipse".

Golden makes a huge array of gels, mediums and grounds. Micaceous Iron Oxide is iridescent  and toothy.  Fiber Paste is white, opaque and absorbent.  Molding Paste is gray and has a slick surface.  The possibilities are endless. Try one or several and email me your thoughts.

Hmmmm, is there a workshop in my future?

Podcast
, podcast, who has a podcast?  Me! That's who! Check me out on Itunes. Now you can have me 24 hours a day.  Scary isn't it? Should I mention my YouTube channel?  Nah, nevermind. Don't go there, you should be painting. Besides they are the same videos that are on the podcast. (Come on, I have to sleep once in awhile!)
