Welcome to the new Studio Website ~

If this website looks a lot like the newsletter you got a few weeks ago, don't be surprised.  I've stripped down my website to make it lean and more user friendly.  I hope you'll visit often and become more involved by visiting my  blog on a periodic basis.  I hope to see you in a workshop or free lecture soon. Have a great summer!

Upcoming Classes &Workshops ~

Follow this link to see my summer schedule of classes, workshops and FREE Golden lectures.

I am very excited about the newest paint in the Golden Line OPEN

This paint will change the way you work in acrylics.  Unbelievably long open time, easy blending, glazing like you've always wanted but couldn't quite achieve.  You gotta see this! Come play in the studio with this new paint at my Wild and Wooly #6 workshop.

Golden is breaking new ground once again, with Digital Grounds.  You can print on Fluid Paint films, Tar Gel,  Fine Pumice, you name it. You will learn how to make paint films and send them through the printer.  A jaw dropping combination of technology and paint.  Where will this take you?  Find out at Wild and Wooly #7 in my studio.

In September I'm bringing in Paint Madness for Wild and Wooly #8.  You can hone your chops in the studio with all my cool toys.  And, if you missed WW6 or WW7 you can dabble there too. We will also spend some time doing critique and problem solving with your work.

Check out the new Wild and Wooly Series of Workshops!  If you're interested, register early! These will fill up fast.

News ~
Several pieces for a luxury highrise near Seattle.
Los Angeles based designer, Meri Hornberger, chose my work (one of which is "Moorish" above) to use in the designs for the new Bellevue Towers. Meri splits her time between Los Angeles, Palm Springs and Portland.   I'm excited to be asked to work with her.

Kaiser Hospital purchases three new media prints.

My good friend and art consultant, Robert Jean Ray, recently placed three of my pieces at the new Kaiser Hospital in the Sacramento area.  Robert and I have a long working history together.  He's getting on the band wagon with my new media prints, too.  See below.

What are new media prints?

They are my investigation into combining digital imagery with acrylic paint.  First I manipulate forms in Photoshop and then print them out on an Epson archival printer. This part of the process can take a very long time, often much longer than if I just painted on canvas.  I paint on the prints with Golden Acrylic Paint.  The result is a piece that is both forward looking and modern, yet grounded in traditional painterly techniques.

Technique Corner ~

Dry Dragging Gels

I used this technique on Moorish, above. For this very unusual texture, I like to make a thick glaze with Golden Fluid and Heavy Gel Gloss. Use about 20% Fluid paint to 80%  Heavy Gel Gloss.  This will give you a transparent, but thick, glaze.  Spread this out with a spatula on your surface.  Come back and scrape it down to a fairly thin level. Wait about 5-10 minutes depending on the weather, until it starts to get tacky.  Then bring more of this thick glaze mixture back on top with a clean spatula and drag it across the first layer (which is now slightly tacky). You will get amazing texture and shape that can't be made any other way.  Of course try this out first on a sample piece before you commit to a finished painting!
